Tall, dark-skinned model turned Nollywood actress and producer, Blessing Effiom-Egbe, took a leave from the movie industry few years ago to settle down and start a family. The mother of two, Michelle and Daniel, recently returned to the movie terrain, with a new flick which is fast creating a buzz.

Armed with a degree in script writing and film production from City Varsity in Cape Town, Blessing has five films to her credit; Before the Val and After the Val, African Queen, The Rivals, Working the Lane and recently the yet to be released ?Two Brides and a Baby?, starring Stella Damasus, Kalu Ikeagwu, Keira Hewatch, O.C Ukeje, Okey Uzoeshi, Chelsea Eze, Blessing Egbe and others. The movie which has added a new leaf to it already envious cap of positive reviews and awards as it bags twelve nominations from the prestigious Nollywood award, the Best of Nollywood Award (BON).

Two Brides and a Baby?s twelve (12) nominations has been described as ?a departure from the norm? include, Best Supporting actress (English), Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Revelation of the year male, Revelation of the year Female, Movie of the year, Cinematography of the year, Best use of costume, Director of the year, Editor of the year, Movie with the best sound, Screenplay of the year categories. The movie which was produced by the ex-international model but now actress(Blessing Effiom Egbe), and directed by Teco Benson, ?Two Brides & a Baby? will be premiered on November 17 will hit Nigerian Cinemas on November 25, 2011.
The Amiable screen goddess and a graduate of Theatre Art, Blessing Egbe, in an interview with a reporter opens up on her experience as a full-time house wife for three years, her acting career, modeling and other issues.
Here?s an excerpt from the exclusive interview;
NOT everybody knows you are married. How does it feel to be Mrs. Egbe?
What is really funny about the whole thing is having to say Mrs., I haven’t gotten a hang of that yet. I keep saying my name is Blessing Egbe and my husband will go like? na wa? o for you, he dey hard you for mouth (laughs). Two kids after and I’m still feeling like, I’m still just Blessing. Now, I’m used to it. Now I can just say I’m Mrs. Egbe but even when I say it (laughs), I go oops, okay o I’m really Mrs. o.
Before you took a break from public glare, you were more prominent as a model and not as Nollywood actress per se, was it that you weren’t ready for the industry at that time?
I wasn’t really ready so to speak because I was one leg in, one leg out. I was still thinking?I mean I left Cape Town, I told my agents that I was coming back. That was in 2004. And I came to shoot Before the Val, because I had taken a script writing and production course in City Varsity in Cape Town. I shoot the movie, with Stephanie and Desmond, got a good reception, went back and my body was just itching, I wanted to shoot another movie, I came back and I never went back again. Even at that I was taking my time. I was very gradual. I wasn’t shooting like five films in a year. I did one in a year, Before the Val, (2005), African queen (2006/2007) and then The Rivals. Anyway between 2004 and 2007, I had four films.

So, what about your acting career, you didn’t do much then. Why?
I remember I went on set for two people, I just ended up quarreling because so many things were not?I mean I came from an industry, where you plan but people don’t plan. Coming from where I was, the modeling industry in quote, when they say 7’0clock call time, you get there for seven and you start counting because they paid by the hour, so sometimes we even go there by 6’0clock and sign so that our money starts counting. So I had that orientation. 7′oclock call time, I’m there and there is absolutely nobody, people come four hours late and I’m like, what is going on? And you know, you can’t talk because you’re not a star and I told the producer, I couldn’t deal with that. But I didn’t just want to start production.
I actually read Theatre Art in the University but also wanted to have a proper base, a background in film production because theatre art is stage, really, so that was when I went and did a course in scriptwriting and production and I started writing and producing proper.
Your modeling career, was it majorly in Cape Town?
That was where I finally settled. I started from here. From here, I won the ECOWAS Best Model, 2002. Then, I represented Nigeria, Top Model International in Lebanon. From there Valerie Campbell, the mother of Naomi Campbell, took us to London to try to get us a modeling agency, we were there for a while, went to Ukraine, Milan, Paris, everywhere and I finally settled in Cape Town.
You must have been very young then. How old were you then?
Yes I was quite young but I had already graduated then. I did my NYSC in 2001/2002. So while in Camp, that was when I sneaked out, I jumped the fence to go for the ECOFEST Competition and I won.

Modeling is an interesting profession. It’s sweet. It is glamorous. You meet people. You travel. You’re pampered. Men die for you, especially the white men you know, and I was the spec. But funnily, I didn’t allow all that get into my head and that was why I could leave at the time I did. I left in my prime. I left when I was hottest. It got to a point then that when there is a competition and I am coming for it, the other models will just feel that just because I’m involved that they had no chance in that competition.
Naomi Campbell was just so crazy about me she wanted me model her designs always. She will say I want Blessing to do it, I want Blessing. I don’t know I just got tired of the whole thing. I guess at a point I became too knowledgeable about the industry and I wanted to know everything. If I was called up for a job I wanted to know how much I will be paid for as long as the job is running, you know I just became a diva so much that when people called me up I begin to ask too many questions and it got to a point they just became tired of my wahala.
For the few years you took a break from Nollywood, what did you miss about the industry?
Nothing really, because coincidently, at the time I took a break the industry was going through a recess. We had gone into a ditch and were trying to get out of it. Thinking about it now, I still think we are in it. It’s even deteriorated so bad that we have now gone into pornographic films, no story lines, no substance, no educational aspect, absolutely no moral aspect. Just plain wild porn, demeaning the men and women folk. One begins to wonder what the industry is doing?I mean there are few producers trying to maintain the dignity of Nollywood but even they have been suppressed by the wild influx of porn. So I’m happy I recessed when I did. I would have been irrelevant anyway but not to worry though, I’m back now to join the sane producers who are striving to put back Nollywood where it belonged. We are bringing back class and hoping the public will support us in the attempt.
Speaking on the nomination, Blessing Egbe says the 12 nominations shows that hard work pays. ?We went extra miles for the movie, as I speak to you; we are still going extra miles. We wanted something very unique from what is obtainable in the market, the story isn?t your regular run of the mills, the casting was done painstakingly, and the technical input was close to perfection while the director gave it his all. This nominations show that hard work pays. We hope for the best and we believe our best is yet to come?.

Sometime last week, it was news everywhere that one of Nigeria?s top on-air personality, Olisa Adibua who runs the Morning Rush on Beat FM, beat up a junior colleague.

Did I hear me say what the heck..?? It is even worse that this happened right in the working environment.

From reports of eyewitnesses and the victim himself by name Adewunmi Oyekanmi, it was gathered that trouble started for Adewunimi who works as a night editor, when he was spotted taking a nap on the couch after rounding up his duties. Immediately his ?Boss? Olisa sighted him, he pounced on the guy, beat him with objects and even destroyed his phone. He even went to the extent of threatening to fire anyone who tried to stop him.

As I am writing this, it keeps baffling me that a so-called enlightened public figure would stoop so low as to engage in such a horrific act of battery, and it even baffles me more on what must have triggered his action. Is it that he just didn?t like the dude and have been waiting for an opportunity to deal with him, or he just got off being high on some drug or something (that in itself is no news).

It was not made exactly clear why Olisa took it so hard on the poor dude, but one thing for sure is that, no matter what, especially coming from someone like him, it is VERY improper to batter a fellow man regardless of whatever influence he might have had over him.

It is rather sad to hear of stories where people are victimized just because they are regarded as a ?nobody? by so called superiors.

Will we ever cease to hear controversial stories about our beloved Tonto! The actress has once again landed herself in another hot mess.

Recently, during the shooting of a movie, it was learnt that Tonto Dikeh insulted Ghanaian top actor Van Vicker during a shoot. Details leading to the outburst from Tonto were not really clear, as nobody seems to know exactly what called for it.

Eye witnesses claimed that it all started when Tonto was urged to do a joint rehearsal with the Actor, which is only normal, as they have been having separate rehearsals. Instead of seeing reason with this, Tonto expressed a nonchalant attitude toward the gesture and in the middle of it all, lit a cigarette. This did not go too well with the actor (Vicker) as he tried talking to her to put off the cigarette or do the smoking out of location, and in her rage, our dear beloved Tonto rained insults and abuses on Vicker even threatening to hit him.

]

This was totally out of place as even the actor himself was dumbfounded at the whole situation.

Now due to this insult, word has it that the actress may be banned from either acting in Ghana or featuring in any Ghanaian movie, so she has been urged to either apologize to the star actor as well as the Ghanaian film industry or stand a chance of loosing out on being part of their movie makers.

Van Vicker is a top and well respected actor in Ghana, and as such it is expected that he be respected like any other Nollywood star.
It?s quite obvious the major issues that beset the relationship of the newly wedded celebrity couple’s (Mercy Johnson and Prince Odianose) undying love which both parties have found in each other.

Mercy Johnson or Mercy J, as I like to call her, is a well-known and highly respected celebrity (as we all know) and an icon which so many (especially Nigerian ladies) look up to, mostly as a role model. As a role model it is eminent and agreeable that those that look up to you often take after the things you do, the way you react to situations and the decisions you make in times of dire situations. Now despite the shocking revelation (which could easily have destroyed any form of relationship between any couple) Mercy J decided to go ahead with the union, which to me is an act of deep and intense true love.

True love to me is the ability to care for someone despite their faults, wrongs, mistakes and setbacks. That is exactly what one of our role models (Mercy J) showed towards her prince.

How many ladies would go ahead with a marriage after finding out that the man she loved, made sacrifices for, and intend to marry, was still married to another woman? (Think about that). To me this is the first story of this kind that I have heard, although there may be others that I am unaware of, if there are, they have got to be very few.
People, even celebrities, divorce their spouses upon such shocking and sudden revelations. Some of them, who have even bore children together, often end their marriages for something less (for example- an affair they didn?t know about).

A certain celebrity (I?m not going to mention any names because of certain reasons) recently ended her marriage upon discovery that her spouse may have been having an affair with another lady even after having a couple of kids together. How much more that of our very own Mercy J who found out that the man she was about to get married to may still be married to another lady yet she decided to go through with it, despite the emotional shock and trauma the news may have caused her. This to me is an act of a high level of maturity and pure proof of true love.
Mercy J proved to the world and people that look up to her that despite the trials that may befall relationships, if you truly love someone you should not let anyone or anything deprive you of a lifelong happiness with the person. No matter what problems, trials or temptations you face, your ability to face them head on and handle/deal with them and still stand (be happy) shows to a large extent how mature you have become.
I was just a fan (not a huge one) of Mercy J but after seeing how she handled this situation I guess I?m forced to say I am now a huge fan of hers, not because she?s a good actress (we all know that) but because she?s a good, mature and reasonable person, above all she?s true to herself.
Some may see her action and decision as an act of foolishness but I see it as an act of maturity and true love. Fact is, it doesn?t matter how anyone sees it, what matters is how she sees it, so to Mercy Johnson and her prince (Prince Odianosen) I say a huge congratulations and a very happy married life.

With a very large turnout of stars, Nollywood truly showed its support for the screen sweetheart. However, tongues have been wagging as to why a few of the stars did not show up at the wedding. Some of these stars include Omotola Jolade Ekeinde, Ini Edo, Oge Okoye, Tonto Dike, Halima Abubakar and a few others. What is more surprising is that some of these stars are supposedly quite close to the actress, especially Halima Abubakar who used to be not only a very close acquaintance, but also like a sister, owing to the fact that the two actresses hail from the same state.

Could it be that some of them did not want to be involved in the so-called ?scandal? that reared its ugly head just before the wedding??

Rumors going around is that some of these colleagues decided to stay back in the UK where most of them attended Uche Jombo?s movie premier, while some others claimed they were held back to attend Nothinghill Carnival, all in a bid to get an excuse for not being present at the wedding.

What ever the case, I think each one is entitled to his or her own choice. If these stars decided not to be present at the wedding, it is for reasons best known to them and they should not be criticized for it.

However, it was a very touchy moment for Mercy when Genevieve walked into the wedding venue as Mercy on spotting her, reportedly broke down in tears and wept for about five minutes. How touching.

Aside Genevieve, a lot of other top stars and artistes graced the event. Also in attendance was Kenneth Okonkwo, Patience Ozokwo, Madam Kofo, Stephanie Okereke, Jim Iyke, Emeka Ike, Segun Arinze, Ghanian actress Yvonne Nelson who played her chief Brides Maid, amongst many others.

Attendance or no attendance, the actress has had her day and every one present where pleased and satisfied that the day came to a pass successfully.

Meanwhile,

Not only did they have the venue packed, but they created a lot waves and recorded a notable incident when Kanye West himself graced the concert in person.
My questions are:
Is there a limit to what D?banj, Don Jazzy and the MOHIT?s crew can do?
Will D?banj, Don Jazzy and the MOHIT?s crew successfully stand and conquer the world entertainment market?
I see a near future where this artist will win Grammy awards and make not only this country proud, but Africa as a whole.
I wish D?banj, Don Jazzy and the MOHIT?s crew all the best and honestly I think the sky is no limit for you guys.
